Why Ghost of Yotei’s Blockbuster Polish Can’t Steal the Spotlight from Small Studios Anymore
2020 was a fever dream. For video games, and absolutely nothing else. In PlayStation’s orbit alone, we got the raw emotional wreckage of The Last of Us: Part 2, the acrobatic joy of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the heartfelt charm of Sackboy: A Big Adventure, the nostalgia bomb of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and the wind-swept brilliance of Ghost of Tsushima—all before the PlayStation 5 even landed in our living rooms. What a year. I still remember staring at my TV, katana in hand as Jin Sakai, thinking gaming had hit a new peak. Fast forward to 2026, and while the PS5 has its own library of gems, that kind of relentless, back-to-back knockout schedule hasn’t really repeated itself.
What we do have, though, is Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yotei. A spiritual sequel that swaps Jin’s tortured honor for Atsu’s searing quest for revenge, this game is everything a fan could ask for—gorgeous landscapes that make your retinas sigh in contentment, combat that feels like painting death with a brush made of steel, and a story soaked in the moody silence of classic samurai cinema. Honestly, slipping into Atsu’s sandals and letting the grass whip around her ankles is a tactile delight.
And yet… none of that really matters anymore. At least, not in the way it used to.
This Isn’t the Kind of Crown People Cheer For
I don’t doubt that Ghost of Yotei
